Peachtree 10-K

I ran the Peachtree 10K today. It is claimed to be the largest 10K in existence. I’ve run that distance repeatedly in the last couple of weeks and struggled to finish in less than an hour. I took two rest days, allowed myself to carb-load a bit, adopted a sound strategy and managed to finish in 55:16. Considering that I couldn’t run a mile two months ago, a 10K at a 9 minute pace is huge progress.

Shockingly, that inauspicious time placed me in the top 20% of men and top 10% in the 55-59 age group. Atlanta Track Club has gone out of their way to normalize walking and the race is worse for it. At least tell the walkers to stay to the right and don’t mix them in with runners who didn’t provide a qualifying time. Fortunately, I have a qualifying time for next year so it will be less of an issue if I choose to run it again. I’d say that is unlikely as there are far more interesting things to do.
