Rethinking...

My post earlier today clarified my thinking.

A 50K ultra next week is a distraction from my goal. I need to focus on running the 10 miler in 1:25:00 on October 20th, the half-marathon in 1:50:00 on Thanksgiving, and Tokyo in 3:40:00 on March 2nd.

That requires building my distance and speed. The ultra misdirects my focus to hills and trails and greatly increases the risk of an injury. So no ultra for me this year.

Instead of 20 mile trail runs with vert, I'm going to get back to doing intervals and tempo runs and whittling my mile time down to 6:30.

Galloway calls it the magic mile: take your best (magic) mile time, multiply it by 1.3, multiply that by 26.2 and you have your target marathon time. 6.5* 1.3 * 26.2 = 3:41.39.

My current mile best is 7:24 but that was incidental. I haven't actually taken a rest day, gone to a track, warmed up properly, and hammered out a best mile. I'll need to do that this weekend. I'm wondering if I have a sub-7 in me at the moment. I'm guessing I do.
